A simile contains like or as and a metaphor does not. So in the sentence: It felt as if the whole globe was dressed in snow. It has the word AS in the sentence therefore its a simile!

Similes, and metaphors are two things that are comparing themselves to each other. The trick is the similes have to have like or as, and metaphors do not!
