The celebration of Kwanzaa is meant to honor African American heritage and culture, mainly through feasting and gift-giving, much like Christmas and other major holidays.

Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday, nor is it meant to replace Christmas. It is based on the year-end harvest festivals that have taken place throughout Africa for thousands of years.
